Fall Sports Are A No Go For Wareham

After a lot of wondering, the verdict is out. Unfortunately, all fall sports (Volleyball, Football, Field Hockey, Cross Country, and Soccer) have been canceled. However, there are plans to postpone the season until next spring.

Today, the South Coast Conference decided together to not hold a sports season this fall. They instead are planning to put these sports in the "floating season" slated for February 22nd, and would take place until April 25th.

We are still left to wonder if a winter season is going to happen. Even though fall sports have been canceled, they are luck to have already planned this "floating season" for fall sports. However, no floating season has been created if winter sports are not to happen. It leaves you to wonder what will happen if winter sports are canceled.

The South Coast Conference Superintendents (ORR, Wareham, Fairhaven, GNB Voke, Case, Bourne, Apponequet, DR, Seekonk, Somerset Berkeley), say that one of the main challenges to having a fall sports season was that many schools in the conference are starting remotely. They were worried that not allowing students to learn in school, but allowing them to play sports would send mixed messages to the public. The respective superintendents will meet again in November to make a final decision on winter sports.

Do you have questions about high school sports this year? I'll be interviewing Wareham's Athletic Director and asking your questions. Send them to me at itroupe2023@wareham.k12.ma.us
